Healthy Snacks vs Junk Snacks: Explained

What are healthy snack recipes usually made of? How can you tell unhealthy snacks from nutritional snacks and junk food from healthy food? If you want to learn the answers to these questions, read on.

Healthy foods vs junk foods

If you’re not sure whether you are making healthy food choices; remember this: you can’t go wrong with fresh fruits and vegetables. These two are your best examples of healthy snacks.

In terms of junk foods, there are a number of examples that are actually very popular snack choices; these include fast food burgers, French fries, processed foods and other “to-go” meals. We have written a list of top 10 unhealthy snacks you should avoid.

However, truth be told, there is no such thing as junk food. Hamburgers and French fries contain some nutrients and are not bad if you only indulge in them occasionally. They become unhealthy or become “junk foods” if you have them everyday of the week.

Most people who take snacks do so in a hurried way. Busy schedules usually leave no time to prepare healthy snacks; thus, we just eat whatever is available and accessible.

That’s why fast foods and convenience meals are very popular. And let’s face it, most of them taste good. Added to this is the fact that we are in an era when television commercials and other ads portray convenience meals as cool.

Developing healthy eating habits

So, how do you resist the temptation of choosing junk snacks over nutritional snacks? One way to do this is to improve the look and taste of the healthy snacks you prepare.

A carrot stick is nutritious, but is not very appetizing by itself. Ergo, eat it with mustard or ranch dip. A banana is good, but it would be even better if you make a banana smoothie.

So, the best way to make it easier for you to select healthy foods over junk foods is to be creative. Add more flavor to your meals and take time to prepare them well.

Healthy cooking

Another way you can make your favorite snacks healthier is to replace some ingredients. Meat spaghetti is a great tasting snack, but it would be much healthier if you replace meat sauce with tomato sauce.

Pizza is delicious but has very high calorie content. You can shave off some of the calories by opting for a homemade vegetarian pizza with low-fat cheese.

You can still enjoy your favorite food without sacrificing healthy nutrition. You just need to be creative and know how to replace bad ingredients with good ones and still come up with great tasting snacks.
