Healthy Snacks for Lunchboxes

Choosing snacks for kids should not be done by just picking whatever is available. They should be nutritious snacks and should be easy to prepare.

Snacks for lunchboxes should remain fresh for hours; or at least, until the snack break. Below are some healthy snacks for kids that you can pack in their school lunchboxes without worrying that they will not be fresh come snack time.

1. Fruits. Banana, grapes and strawberries would be great. Apples are the best. As kid snacks, apples should be cut into quarters. If you worry that they will turn brown, soak the cut apples in water with lemon juice and refrigerate overnight. This will keep them fresh for the next morning until break time.

2. Veggie sticks or cuts. Carrots, cucumber or celery sticks. Kids generally don’t like this sort of stuff, but you can make a delicious, healthy dip to go with them like ranch or cheese. It would also help if the veggies are cut into star or moon shapes. In short, be creative. Children are more likely to eat food they don’t commonly like if they look fun.

3. Chicken or tuna sandwich cut in small sizes. Both options are filling and rich in protein. If you chose chicken, use the breast part for a healthier serving. Shred the chicken and add chopped celery. Lettuce or a slice of tomato will also go a long way towards adding much needed vitamins and nutrients. Just make sure that it is not the tomato or lettuce your kid sees first when he unwraps the sandwich.

4. Peanut butter and banana sandwich. This combination is actually favored by most children and you don’t need to worry that they won’t eat it. Use wheat bread instead of ordinary white bread.

5. Combination of nuts and dried fruits. A bag of mixed goods that include raisins, dried cherries, almonds and sunflower seeds. You can use other types of nuts or dried fruits that your child likes.

6. Tomato or veggie soup paired with corn muffin. You can put the soup in a mini-thermos to keep it hot.

7. Rolled tortillas with fillings. You can fill these with different healthy recipes; like tuna, shredded chicken, turkey, cheese, lettuce, chopped celery, etc. You can change the fillings depending on what your child likes.

Lunchbox snacks should encourage children into eating healthy foods, so make sure that you make the packaging and food preparation as attractive as possible. The better the meals look, the more likely they will be eaten.
